Recognizing the week of October 6th through October 12th as “Emergency Nurses Week” in the City of Philadelphia. WHEREAS, The Emergency Nurses Association, established in 1970, addresses issues relevant to emergency care, publishes professional guidelines, provides education for emergency nurses and issues a peer-reviewed journal; and WHEREAS, Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has celebrated Emergency Nurses Day on the second Wednesday in October; and WHEREAS, In 2001 the Emergency Nurses Association expanded the celebration to a full week to shine a bigger light on emergency nurses and their commitment to patient care; and WHEREAS, These professionals focus on the immediate care of patients who require immediate medical care; and WHEREAS, The primary responsibilities of emergency nurses is to identify medical issues, determine severity, and provide immediate support to minimize negative long-term effects and, if necessary, sustain life; and WHEREAS, Emergency nurses do more than treat physical issues, they must also treat the emotions of their patients as they are typically the first to see a patient; and WHEREAS, Nurses in the ER don’t have the luxury of being specialized in one area of expertise. Instead, the ER RN nurse needs to know how to do variety of tasks quickly and competently.
