Honoring and congratulating the Educator of the Month, Elaine Estes, a Spanish teacher at Furness High School who recently shined at the U.S. Olympic Trials as a long distance runner. WHEREAS, Track running became Elaine’s favorite hobby after her introduction to the sport with a group of friends during her sophomore year at Oxford Area High School; and WHEREAS, She always showed she was resilient and self - motivated since a young age, being described by her parents as someone who “never had to be pushed”, and having a “different motor than most”; and WHEREAS, Her love for running propelled her into competing in the Olympic Trials taking place in Orlando, Florida, after qualifying in the CIM (California International Marathon) with close to a minute to spare; and WHEREAS, Estes’ parents Tara and Bill, best friend Marr, and partner Garton served as her core fanbase and support system. They continuously support her running endeavors whether it be through traveling to support at track events, or making sure she is getting the necessary rest; and WHEREAS, She maintained being a full-time teacher in the School District of Philadelphia, while being a full-time athlete, daughter, spouse, and friend; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we honor and congratulate the Educator of the Month, Elaine Estes, a Spanish teacher at Furness High School who recently shined at the U.S. Olympic Trials as a long distance runner.
