Recognizing and congratulating the Champion of the Week, Buddy Martinez of Timoteo Sports, which utilizes athletics to engage with and mentor young people in the City of Philadelphia. WHEREAS, Buddy Martinez is a 37 year-old Philadelphia native and has served Philadelphia’s young people for 21 years; and WHEREAS, Buddy Martinez has always had the heart to help serve the youth in Philadelphia. He was 16 years old when he first started serving the community at the Iglesia Del Barrio after school program. The youth he has mentored are usually labeled as “troubled” but Martinez states that they are “the most intelligent, creative, and most resilient youth”; and WHEREAS, Timoteo Sports offers multiple sports programs including flag football, a volleyball club, a basketball league, and a summer camp, for which they hire youth summer camp counselors from the surrounding neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, Timoteo Sports also has the "More Than Sports" Initiative which incorporates mentorship and life coaching, tutoring, college application support, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and connecting young people to career and job opportunities; and WHEREAS, Timoteo Sports mentors Philadelphia's youth guiding them in the areas of spirituality, academics, career pursuits, and interpersonal growth.
